Abstract

A leather-like material is made by mixing collagen fibres with water to form a doughy pulp having a pH value between 5.0 and 8.0; heating the pulp at a temperature between 40 and 65 DEG C. to solubilize a portion of the collagen therein without appreciably shrinking the fibres; continuing the heating until at least 5% by weight of the collagen in the pulp has been solubilized while the major portion remains in fibrillar form; and forming the pulp. In a preferred embodiment, the collagen fibres are prepared from the corium layer of unlimed cattle skins by beating in an aqueous slurry in a paper beater. The fibres are subsequently dewatered. The fibres are formed into a doughy pulp containing 10 to 25%, preferably 12 to 18%, solids by weight and having a pH between 5.5 and 7.0. The pulp is heated to between 54 and 62 DEG C so that there is little fibre shrinkage and little formation of gelatin. The heating is continued until up to 30% by weight of the collagen has been solubilized. The pulp may be extruded on to a moving conveyer to form sheets or filaments or may be moulded to produce solid or hollow bodies, the forming preferably being carried out between 35 and 55 DEG C. Sheets may then be passed over chilled rollers at a temperature between 2 and 10 DEG C. and may be needled. The formed and set collagen may be subjected to the action of a protein precipitating agent or may be tanned using a chrome tanning agent.
