Abstract
444,786. Magnetic chucks. BAERMANN, M., 30, Deutscher Ring, and DYNAMIT AKT.- GES. VORM. A. NOBEL & CO., Troisdorf Bez, both in Cologne, Germany. July 23, 1935, No. 20951. Convention date, July 23, 1934. [Class 60] [See also Group XXXV] A support or holder particularly for an electric lamp comprises a system of permanent bar magnets of high coercive force and soft iron pole shoes, a short-circuiting device movable out of action being provided in the space between the pole shoes and the magnets or the magnet itself being movable between the holding poles and a short-circuiting armature. In the form shown in Fig. 1, two magnets 1 abut against pole shoes 3 terminating in polepieces 11. Each polepiece is divided and bevelled as shown in Fig. 3 so that the holder can cooperate with a surface of any shape. A short-' circuiting armature 7 is slidable in non-magnetic guides 8 so that it rests on extensions 6 of the pole shoes 3 and thus short-circuits the magnets, or it can be withdrawn from the extension by means of a bolt 9 which when rotated by a thumb-piece 10 is raised by the action of a pin 43 on the curved surface of the cover plate 4. The lower part of the casing is closed by a non-magnetic plate 12. In a modification, Fig. 8, the pole shoes 17 are U-shaped, the short limbs abutting against the magnet 15. The short-circuiting armature 19 is adapted to bear against the bends 18 of the pole shoes. In a further modification, the magnet is attached to short polepieces and is movable by a cam or screw so that these polepieces bear either against the holding poles or against a short-circuiting armature. Alternatively, the magnet position may be changed by rotation. When a large holding surface or great strength is required as in chucks, a number of magnet systems may be mounted in a non-magnetic plate and separate short-circuiting armatures or a single spring armature may be controlled by cams to cause the magnet systems to be short-circuited and released in succession. As described, magnets and U-shaped polepieces similar to those shown in Fig. 8 are employed in this embodiment.
