Abstract

The fines collected after washing coal are passed into a slurry sump and a quantity of the lighter material is passed from the sump into a flocculating tank in which the material is settled by the addition of a flocculating agent, the clarified water being passed to a reservoir. The flocculated slurry is returned to the slurry sump to accelerate the deposition of incoming slurry. The fines separated from the shale may be subjected to a similar treatment. Alkali may be added to the material in the slurry sump to obtain the optimum conditions for flocculation and the flocculating agent may be the material known under the Registered Trade Mark "Unifloc."
