Abstract
<PICT:0400915/III/1> Clays such as Keuper clays having base-exchanging properties are converted into a raw slurry with hard water of stated composition and then further diluted and allowed to stand, whereby impurities such as quartz are deposited, and an upper layer of purified slurry is formed. 2-4 per cent of common salt is added to the separated purified slurry, which on further standing thickens, and the thickened slurry is then treated with trisodium phosphate or again with common salt, dried, crushed and bolted, and finally baked at 800-900 DEG C., the baked grains being hydrated with water at 100-200 DEG C. In the above treatments the purified slurry may be thickened with other alkali (including ammonium) salts, and the trisodium phosphate may be replaced by other alkali phosphates, or by alkali oxalates, borates, or silicates. In treating clays low in impurities, the dilution and thickening steps may be omitted. For use in softening water, the treated clay 3 may rest upon a bed of gravel 2 in a cylindrical container 1 provided with a depending conical member 4. Water enters at 6 and is discharged at 7. By this arrangement, the formation of channels in the clay by the flow of water therethrough is stated to be minimized. German Specification 423,224 is referred to.
