Abstract
A cuprammonium solution is spun in a funnel through nozzles having a diameter of less than 0.6 mm. into water to which has been added such small quantities of organic or inorganic acids of greater acidity than carbonic acid that the filaments leave the funnel neutral or alkaline whilst the precipitating liquid leaves the funnel still having an acid reaction. Suitable acids are formic, acetic, oxalic, tartaric, citric, and sulphuric acids and organic sulphonic acids, and these may be employed in concentrations of, for example, 4, 8, or 10 grams per litre. In an example, a normal cuprammonium solution such as is described in Specification 423,642 is spun through a nozzle of diameter 0.3 mm. into water containing 5 grams per litre of sulphuric acid at a temperature of 25 to 35 DEG C. The water leaving the funnel is still acid whilst the filament reacts neutral or weakly alkaline.
