Abstract

444,417. Converting waste into material suitable for drafting and spinning. KERN, R., 172, Volksgartenstrasse, Gladbach, Munich, Germany. Nov. 9, 1934, Nos. 32243 and 32244. Convention dates, Nov. 9, 1933. [Class 120 (iii)] Knotted and entangled waste of artificial silk, wool, or ramie is converted into material suitable for ultimate drafting and spinning by teasing or combing out the waste into a fleece, drawing this fleece by rollers through a gilling or heckling machine to render the fibres or threads parallel and to straighten out looped threads, and cutting the so treated fleece into regular sections to give uniform staple fibre length. Cop waste, cop bottoms, tangled hanks &c. are roughly combed and then treated to eliminate loops in a gilling or heckling apparatus e, Fig. 3, having needle bars f, projecting loop ends being gripped by rollers r and the threads pulled round the needles f. The sliver or fleece is then cut to the desired staple length by knives operating on lines S<6> ... S<10> and the sliver k, Fig. 5, subsequently passed through a drawing frame having rollers z<1>, z<2>, z<3> which are heavily weighted to break any long fibres remaining therein. The final sliver l may be spun on a coarse flyer frame. In a modified arrangement of apparatus the rough combed thread mass is fed on a lattice to feed rollers y, Fig. 6, and thence to a gill box having strong needles f travelling faster than the rollers y and extending for a length greater than that of the longest fibres or threads. The material then passes through heavily weighted rollers r, r<1> running considerably faster than the speed of feed of the material. A rapidly rotating bladed roller o is provided to clear the top roller r<1>. The material is then passed over a table p to a pair of rollers q, ql which rotate slightly faster than the rollers r, r<1>, and then to a cutting or stapling device m.
