[Class 64 (ii)] A heating system, operating at a pressure above atmospheric and employing a liquid which fills the circulation pipes, includes a relatively small closed expansion vessel and means permitting the flow of liquid to or from the system when the volume of the liquid falls below or rises above predetermined values. In one arrangement, comprising a water heater 1, Fig. 1, of the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification, constituting the expansion vessel, a circulating pump 22, and flow and return pipes 21, 12 respectively between which are connected a heat consumer 23 and a pipe 18<a> permitting water to pass from the return to the flow pipe, the water level in the heater effects through a float 2 and linkage the position of a piston valve 7 controlling the flow of water to or from an open tank 13. During the initial heating of the system, the water level rises and effects an upward movement of the valve thus permitting water to pass through the pipes 25, 26 from the system to the tank, while when the system is closed down the water cools and the level falls, thus effecting a downward movement of the valve and the supply of water by the pump 14 from the tank 13 to the system. A non-return valve 17 permits water to pass from the tank 13 into the system if the pump is inoperative during cooling and the pressure in the system falls below atmospheric. The small changes in volume occurring during the operation of the system are not sufficient to move the valve 7 to permit the flow of water either to or from the system. In another arrangement, the position of the pivot point 5, Fig. 2, of the linkage is controlled through links 5<a>, 11<a> by the pressure in the generator and the temperature may be maintained constant by admitting water from the return pipe to the flow pipe.
