Abstract
442,567. Cycle brakes. LEWIS, W. J., 18A, Wycome Road, Hall Green, Birmingham. Nov. 28, 1934, No. 34140. [Class 136 (i)] A cycle brake comprises a rigid bracket 1 of substantially horse-shoe shape, which is adapted to be attached to the cycle frame and is provided with pivots 20 for brake levers 4, the outer arms 6 of which are engaged and actuated by the casings 7 of Bowden cables 8, whose inner wires 9 are anchored to the ends 2 of the bracket 1. The bracket 1 is formed from sheet.metal with shallow rear boundary flanges 15 bent at right-angles to the face, and is provided with outwardlybent ends 2 and with a central projection 16 having a vertical slot 17, whereby the bracket is adjustably secured to the cycle frame by means of a bolt 18 and a pair of clamping-plates 19. Each bell-crank brakelever 4 is formed with a forward extension 21 apertured to receive loosely the screw-threaded shank 23 of a plug 24 slidable in a sleeve 25, whereby the brake-shoe stem 28, passing through holes in the sleeve and plug, may be adjustably clamped by a nut 29. A torsional retraction spring 39 is mounted on each pivot 20. The end of the Bowden wire 9 is detachably secured to a rockable bush 44 mounted in each end of the bracket 1. The wire 9 may be common to both cable limbs 8, its middle part slidably engaging a coupling member connected to the wire of a cable actuated by a hand-lever, the coupling member being movably housed in a junction box, against which all the cable casings abut.
