Abstract
Air is blown into residuary water or sewage tank effluent in presence of powdered or granulated activated carbon under conditions such that mechanical rubbing of the carbon particles against each other renews their surfaces and a part at least of the carbon passes into a highly dispersed state favouring the formation of colloidal complexes of carbon, oxygen and organic matter. The rubbing of the particles may be caused by mechanical agitation. The carbon used may be coated or impregnated with metallic oxides or salts easily subject to hydrolysis, e.g. salts of iron, chromium, cobalt, nickel, manganese gold or copper. The liquid after separation from the carbon by straining is treated with a flocculating agent, such as acids, alkalies, ferric sulphate, aluminium sulphate or sodium phosphate, and the precipitate is separated by decantation or filtering.
