Abstract
A base-exchange material which is insoluble in alkali and which can be used for softening water, fertilizing the soil and for removing acidity and alkalinity from water and aqueous solutions is made by treating lignite, coal or anthracite with sulphuric acid at a temperature which is not allowed to exceed 60 DEG C. The resultant product may be washed and further treated with an alkali or an alkaline salt of a weak acid such as sodium acetate or borax or a neutral salt may be used such as sodium chloride, calcium chloride or lanthanum nitrate. Solutions of calcium, sodium or potassium bicarbonate may also be used. The product is finally dried at a temperature not above 120 DEG C. The product is granular and the grains may be coated with a previous colloid film of the hydroxides or silicates of aluminium, iron or chromium or of the alkaline earth metals or of the hydroxides of silicic, tungstic, molybdic or titanic acids. A colloidal film of silicic acid may be formed by treating the product with hydrochloric acid and a solution of sodium silicate. Hydroxide films may be formed by treating the product with dilute alkali solution and a solution of a metal salt such as chromium or aluminium sulphate.
