442,154. Pumps. ELLIOTT, A. G., Darley Dene, Belper Road, Derby, STARK, F. H., 20, Monthermer Road, Cathays, Cardiff, and WOOD, H., 18, Overdale Road, Derby. Aug. 2, 1934, No. 22589. [Class 7 (ii)] In a multi-cylinder in-line engine a supercharging pump and an exhaust driven turbine are arranged on opposite sides of the cylinder block and connected by a shaft passing through the block, or adjacent thereto. In the V- engine shown a double rotary blower receives combustible mixture from a down-draught carburetter b and delivers it through volute chambers b<6>, b' to intake manifolds a3, a'. A shaft d passes to two turbines arranged outside the V and comprising rotors f, the blades g<1> of which are fed by nozzles from chambers f<4> and manifolds f which should be arranged so that the exhaust periods of cylinders communicating with the same nozzle do not overlap. Similarly the intake manifolds should be arranged so that the inlet periods of the cylinders served by the same pump ports do not overlap. Separate pumps may be provided for each bank of cylinders and, in this case, two connecting shafts will each be transverse to their respective cylinder block. Alternatively the shafts may be at the ends of the banks and connected by gearing.
