Abstract

441,936. Gags. MITCHELL, G. D., 971, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. Aug. 1, 1934, No. 22390. [Class 81 (ii)] A gag for a dog or cat comprises a pair of coil springs A of steel wire having extended arms B, C, inturned and twisted together at their free ends to form mouth engaging members D. The arms are held in open position by pairs of conical washers E housed within the coils and pressed together by wing-nuts F on central screw bolts G. In modifications, each side of the gag comprises a flat steel strip bent into part-circular form to form a spring and having extending arms doubled back on themselves to hold cross pieces forming the mouth-engaging members. Each pair of arms is held open by a pair of plates having forked ends engaging the doubled back arms, and integral with thin metal washers pivotally connected at the centre of the spring. The washers have roughened surfaces, an interposed washer of leather or soft metal such as copper, and superimposed heavy washers having squared holes engaged by the pivot bolt of square section. The washers are pressed together by a wing nut on the bolt. Alternatively a pivoted strut on one arm engaging a toothed rack on the other may be provided.
