[Class 38 (iv)] In a lightning-arrester, a system of spark gap electrodes 2, 2<a>, 2<b> is housed within an insulating chamber 1<d>, and an electromagnetic blow out coil 3 and resistance 5 are housed within a separate insulating chamber 1<c>. The arms 4<a>, 4<b> of the U-shaped magnet 4 carry the resistance 5 and coil 3 and are extended to lie on the outside of the electrode chamber so that the spark gaps are perpendicular to the magnetic field by which they are quenched.
