[Class 108 (i)] [See also Groups I and XVII] In means for emptying refuse bins into carts &c. the bin is locked automatically to a tilting member by a cam engaging the hinge socket of the bin lid, and is automatically disengaged during the return of the bin after tilting. The hinge socket 15, Fig. 3, is welded to a strengthening ring 14 of inverted-U-cross-section. The bin is initially supported at 2, Fig. 1, and then swung up so that the socket 15 engages, lifts, and passes a cam 9 mounted on a shaft 7 ; springs 18 then return the cam, so that it clamps the socket against the wall 10 of the tilting member 5 provided with a freely suspended hinged closure 12, with which the bin lid 17 engages by means of a finger 19. The bin and tilting member are pressed inwards and the closure 12 and lid 17 open, maximum opening being secured at the end of the movement by the engagement of an arm 20 with an abutment 21. Near the end of the return movement, arms 22 on the shaft 7 engage abutments 23, Fig. 8, thus lifting the cam 9 and freeing the hinge socket 15 ; at the end of the movement the arms 22 assume the position shown in Fig. 4, so that the member 5 cannot be moved until the shaft 7 is moved by a fresh bin. Various modifications are described, whereby the closure 12 is prevented from fouling the refuse in the cart &c. In one form, the closure hinge has an arm 24, Fig. 9, connected to an extensible member 25, 26 pivoted at 27, the bottom of the closure then following the path B instead of the path A. In other forms, the arm 24 has a member moving along a fixed guide, or is pivoted to a link 31, Fig. 10, connected to a lever 32 pivoted at 33 and normally resting on a stop 34. In a further form, a rod 37, Fig. 12, swinging about a lower fixed point operates a clutch member 38 co-operating with a clutch member 39 on the closure 12.
