3 Claims. 01. 214-303 The invention relates to a refuse collecting device, comprising a vehicle with a refuse collecting container and dustbins to bedischarged into the container. Such vehicles are usually provided wtih elevators with special tion is bent upwards to engage on shank of the U-formed carriages running in guide rails, and a dustbin placed on or coupled together therewith can in this way be hoisted up and tipped together with the'carriage. l 3
. An object of the invention is to provide a hoisting device for the dustbins without the use of any such carriage. Y
Another object of the invention is to provide a hoisting device, by means of which the dustbin can be connected with the hoisting device when standing on the ground and thus without any trying work for manual lifting of the dustbin.
A further object of the invention is to design a hoisting device of a simple and cheap but efiective construction.
The invention will be more clearly described hereinafter, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rear portion of a refuse collecting vehicle with a hoisting device according to one form of the invention, and
Figure 2 is an elevation of a dustbin connected with an elevator rope.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the front shutter.
The vehicle 1 comprises a refuse collecting container 4, into which refuse is forced by means of a conveyor screw within a casing 3, and the refuse is introduced into an emptying hood with side walls 2 mounted on the rear wall of the container, from which hood the refuse drops onto the screw. Between the side walls 2 a front shutter 5 is mounted swingably around an axle 6 near its lower edge. In the closed position the shutter rests against the flanges of two angle iron frame portions 8, and the shutter may be swung inwards against the action of two spring devices 7 located one at each side close to the said walls 2. These devices comprise a spring within two telescopic tubes, of which one is pivotally connected with the shutter and the other is pivotally connected with a suitable fixed stud. The spring devices serve to keep the closed shutter pressed against the angle irons 8 and to restore the shutter with the dustbin after the tilting operation. An elevator rope 11 from a hydraulic jack 13 passes over a sheave 12 on the collecting container and a sheave 10 pivoted on the upper edge of the shutter 5, from which it depends downwardly to the centre of a yoke 14. From each end thereof a wire depends, and to the lower end of each wire a coupling hook 16 is fastened for engaging two handles 17 on opposite sides of the dustbin 18 required also for carrying the dustbin by two men. The handles 17 are made of a piece of round iron bent into U-form with flattened out ends, of which one end is bent downwards and the other end is bent upwards. The coupling hook 16 is in principle also in the form of a U, but one end porof the bin when the bin engages the shutter.
handle 17, whereas the other end portion is bent horizontally outwards and forms together withthe horizontal'rod welded to the coupling hook 16 a fork embracing the othershank of the handle 17. The coupling member 16 may be disengaged by passing it downwards through the handle and tilting it to such a position that it can pass upwards through the handle17.
V In order to prevent the pressure from the rope 11 on the sheave 10 from swinging the shutter 5 inwards before the dustbin has engaged the opening in the shutter a locking device 9 is provided. This locking device comprises a hook 24 pivoted between two studs 25 welded to the backside of the shutter, and the hook passes through an opening 26 and engages a pin 27 secured to the angle iron 8. A rod 28 is welded at one end to the upper edge of the hook 24 and is'bent in such a way that theother end 29 passes through the discharge opening 30 in the shutter at a point, where the end 29 is pressed downwards .by the projecting flange around the mouth The hook 24 will thereby be swung upwards and'releasedfrom the pin 27. In order to normally keep the hook 24 in its lockingposition the flat spring 31 is secured 'at its one end..to;thej backside 'of the shutter, whereas its-other end rests against the rod 28 from below.
To the hood and the conveyorscrew casing 3 a substantially vertical sliding chute 19 of sheet metal with upwardly bent edges is fixed. The dustbin 18 is provided with coupling members consisting of two parallel lugs 20 connected by a coupling rod 21 having its middle portion bent inwards and welded to the wall of the dustbin. A reinforcement and wearing lining 22 welded to the wall extends from the top to the bottom thereof.
The described hoisting device operates in the following manner. The dustbin to be emptied is placed on the ground preferably in the position shown by full lines in Figure 1, and the coupling hooks 16 are introduced into the handles 17 of the bin. When the jack 13 is started the bin is lifted by the rope 11 and slides in the chute 19 with the lining 22 and the lugs 20 within the chute guided by the upright edges thereof. At the completion of this sliding motion the both end portions of the coupling rod 21 on the bin are introduced from below each into one of two downwardly open coupling hooks 23 fixed on the shutter 5, and at continued pull in the rope 11 the bin turns around the hooks 23 until the mouth of the bin is introduced into the corresponding opening in the shutter and a projecting flange of an angle iron around the orifice of the bin bears against the shutter. Until now the shutter has been locked by the catch device 9, but when the said flange strikes a projection from the catch device the latter is raised against the action of a spring and the shutter is released. The bin has now reached the position 18a.
The both portions of the rope 11 on each side of the sheave 10 have formed such an angle to each other that an advantageous direction of the pulling power acting on the bin is obtained. When the bin hereafter is tipped to the discharge position indicated 18b the sheave 10 at first accompanies the rope 11 but proceeds thereafter free of the rope, the direction of which now is determined by the sheave 12.
When the jack after the discharge moves back, the compressed springs 7 exert a sufficient pressure on the shutter to turn the same and the bin beyond the dead 2,932,417 t V p device is very simple. A special advantage is that the charged dustbin can be lifted directly from the ground, and it must not be fitted snugly in the position shown in Figure l, as it can be guided by the operator into the correct sliding position either from the ground 'or di-' rectly from a small cart for transportation.
