Abstract

Vegetable and artificial cellulosic fibres are treated by incorporating therein an amine, quaternary ammonium base, or salt thereof, which contains a chain having at least eight carbon atoms, and causing formaldehyde to act on the fibres. The formaldehyde may be added to the solution of the amine or the like employed or may be applied in a separate bath. After impregnation, the fibres are dried at a temperature of 80--90 DEG C. In the case of artificial fibres, the amine or the like may be incorporated in the solution from which the fibres are spun. The spinning solution may contain also a protein and, if required, a fixing agent such as formaldehyde, an acid amide, cholic acid, or tannin. The following examples are included: (1) Artificial silk or cotton is introduced into a bath containing stearylamine acetate and formaldehyde, centrifuged, and dried at 80--90 DEG C; (2) The previous example is repeated, using isopropyl - dodecylamine lactate or N-dodecyl-1 : 3-propylene diamine formate in place of stearylamine acetate; (3) Artificial silk prepared from a viscose containing protein, is introduced into a bath comprising dimethyl-stearylamine and formaldehyde, centrifuged, and dried at 80--90 DEG C.; (4) The previous example is repeated, using methyl-dibutyl-dodecyl-ammonium bromide or stearyl pyridinium chloride instead of dimethyl-stearylamine; (5) An emulsion comprising stearylamine acetate and formaldehyde is introduced into viscose, if desired together with a protein according to the process of Specification 438,199, and the viscose spun in the usual manner. Specifications 426,956 and 440,449 also are referred to.
