Abstract

Water-in-oil emulsions are obtained by emulsifying water in oil in the presence of an insoluble salt of the sulphuric acid ester of a normal primary alcohol having at least 8, preferably 12 to 18, carbon atoms. Preferably the salt is produced in situ by dissolving the sulphuric acid ester in the oil and agitating with an aqueous solution of a salt of a metal, e.g. lead, aluminium, iron, tin and barium salts. Suitable sulphuric acid esters include n-lauryl-1-sulphuric acid and the corresponding esters of myristyl, stearyl, cetyl, oleyl and ricinoleyl alcohols. Oils which may be treated include medicinal paraffin oil, Neat's foot oil, olive oil, castor oil, cottonseed oil, linseed oil and petroleum lubricating oils. The proportion of sulphate ester or salt thereof may vary from 0,02 per cent to 10 per cent by weight of the oil, preferably between 0,05 per cent and 2 per cent. According to an example 50 pts. by weight of a heavy paraffin oil is mixed with 1 pt. of n-lauryl-1-sulphuric acid and stirred with 0,25 pt. of lead acetate dissolved in 48,75 pts. of distilled water. The resulting emulsion is a heavy grease and has good lubricating properties, and may readily be extended with oil. Water-linseed oil type emulsions are suitable for use as paints. Specification 358,612 is referred to.
