Abstract

Oil-in-water emulsions are obtained by the use of water soluble salts of sulphuric acid esters of a normal primary alcohol having at least 8, preferably 12--18, carbon atoms as emulsifying agents, the sulphate ester salt being made in situ by dissolving the free acid of the ester in the oil phase and mixing it with an aqueous solution of a suitable base, such as oxides, hydroxides or salts with weak acids of sodium, potassium, ammonium, lithium or magnesium. Suitable sulphuric acid esters include n-lauryl-1-sulphuric acid and the corresponding esters of myristyl, cetyl, stearyl, oleyl and ricinoleyl alcohols. Oils which may be emulsified include medicinal paraffin oil, Neat's foot oil, olive oil, castor oil, cottonseed oil and petroleum lubricating oils. The proportion of emulsifying agent may vary from 0,02 per cent to 10 per cent by weight of the oil, preferably between 0,05 and 2 per cent. According to examples: (1) 30 gms. of heavy paraffin oil, 30 gms. Neat's foot oil and 2 gms. of the sulphuric acid ester of lauryl alcohol are mixed together and mixed with a solution of 2 c.c. of 25 per cent caustic soda solution in 36 c.c. distilled water, with high speed stirring at room temperature. The resulting emulsion has a pH value of 8 and may be used for soaking natural silk to remove serecin. (2) 30 gms. of heavy paraffin oil and 1 gm. of the sulphuric acid ester of lauryl alcohol are mixed and added with stirring to 1 c.c. of 25 per cent caustic soda solution dissolved in 18 c.c. of distilled water. (3) 0,5 pt. by weight of 25 per cent caustic soda solution are added to 29 pts. by weight of water, and boiled. 0,5 pt. by weight of the sulphuric acid ester of lauryl alcohol is added to 70 pts. by weight of asphalt at 120 DEG C., and this is added to the boiling caustic soda solution. Other known emulsifying agents may be used in addition, also known stabilizing agents or agents to inhibit oxidation of the oil may be added. The emulsions are readily diluted with water. Specification 358,612 is referred to.
