440,467. Tempering glass. COMPAGNIES REUNIES DES GLACES ET VERRES SPECIAUX DU NORD DE LA FRANCE, Boussois-sur-Sambre, France. April 9, 1935, No. 11033. Convention date, April 9, 1934. [Class 56] A device for cooling a glass plate or sheet during the process of tempering comprises agitating-devices rotated rapidly in free air close to the surface of the glass. The device comprises two discs 2 arranged parallel with one another and rotated in the same or in opposite directions. Each disc is provided on its inner surface with radial blades 3, and apertures 4 are formed between the blades to facilitate circulation of the air. The glass sheet 1 is supported by tongs from an overhead track 17, and after being heated in a suitable furnace is run into position between the discs, as shown in Fig. 3. The rotation of the discs agitates the air close to the surfaces of the glass, and cooling is effected without subjecting the glass to any appreciable pressure by the air. In modified constructions, the blades 3 are arranged in various positions on the discs 3, or each disc may be replaced by one or more fans of the propeller type.
