Abstract
439,648. Knitting. JONES, T. H., The Aspens, Breck Hill Road, Woodthorpe, Notting- hamshire. July 2, 1934, No. 19466. [Class 74 (ii)] Knitted fabric is produced by the cooperation with a latch needle, of an auxiliary instrument, which receives an already formed stitch loop, and retains newly fed thread to permit the old loop to be passed over a loop of the new thread. In the production of locked stitches, the needle 1 is raised to clear its loop a beneath the latch 2 and over a relatively slidable picker 4, whose point is shrouded within a groove 8, formed in a swell 7 on the needle shank. A new thread b is now laid beneath the open latch and the picker is advanced to hold the latch open and enclose thread b. On retracting the needle and picker together, loop a passes over the open latch, and over thread b, forming it into a loop. The picker is then quickly moved down out of engagement with the open latch and the retraction of the needle continued. Loop a is now caught in the needle hook, whilst the newly formed loop closes the latch and is cast off the needle, being, in its turn, passed over the old loop a. The lower part of the picker may lie behind the needle stem, being cranked at 9, Fig. 2, to bring its upper part to the front. Where the needles are mounted in a bar 10, Figs. 4 and 5, the pickers are mounted in another relatively movable bar 11, which may be accommodated in a recess in the bar 10, Fig. 5, and slidably connected thereto by pins 13, engaging slots 14. The picker, or needle may carry channelled tongues 12, Fig. 4, to serve as guides. The invention may be applied to multi-latched needles. The picker may be shaped to fit within a spoon shaped tip of the latch 2. Small lateral movement may be given to the picker to facilitate engagement with the open latch. Specifications' 329,098, 330,041, [both in Class 74 (ii)], 360,998, and 380,554 are referred to.
