Abstract
438,442. Propulsion apparatus for electric vehicles. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., Deptford, and PRESTIGE, J: T., 1a, Cockspur Street, both in London. May 18, 1934, Nos. 15015/34 and 1512/35. [Class 104 (iii)] In an electric vehicle having an auxiliary installation comprising a motor-generator set 1, 2 and a battery 4, emergency means 9, 10 are provided for coupling the motor-generator set to the traction wheels and for supplying the set with current from the battery. The generator 2 or both the motor 1 and generator may be used as the emergency drive, and in the latter case the motor 1 may be cut out after the vehicle has started. The control mechanism 10 of the coupling means 9 closes a switch 11 and so energizes a relay 12 to open the circuit of a relay 13 and open the isolating switch 8 of the main supply 19. The closing of the switch 11 also energizes a switch relay 14 to close a circuit from the emergency starting switch 15 to the armature of the generator 2. When the switch 15 is on contact a, it connects the field 16 of the generator to the battery, and the armature to the battery through a resistance 17. As soon as the vehicle begins to move, the switch 15 is moved to contact b, thus connecting the armature directly across the battery. A proportion 3<1> of the lamps may be cut out by a relay 18 controlled by the switch 11. In a modification a circuit is provided between the battery and motor 1 to enable both motor and generator 2 to drive the vehicle so long as the starting handle is on contact a.
