Abstract

238,011. Highfield, J. S. and Highfield, W. E. May 10, 1924. Electric equipment. - Electric trolly road vehicles are equipped with two motor-armatures 3, 4, Fig. 1, preferably rotating in a single field, the main driving armature 3 being supplied from the trolly conductors 9, 10 and the auxiliary driving armature 4 from an accumulator battery 31, which enables the vehicle to leave the trolly conductors and run on battery power alone. When the vehicle is running on the trolly supply and the controller 8 occupies its full-on forward position the armature 4 is connected with an auxiliary field winding 7 so as to work as a generator for charging the battery. When the vehicle leaves the trolly conductors, the circuit-connections are changed over to the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the armature 3 being cut out. Regenerative braking is provided by making the circuit connections shown in Fig. 3, including an additional main field winding 6 and an additional controllex 48; the winding 6 serves also for chaxging the battery with the vehicle at rest and the motor unclutched from the wheels. Fig. 6 shows the disposition of the armature winding 3, 4, and the main and auxiliary field poles 1, 2 which respectively carry the windings 5, 7.
