Abstract

Azo dyes are made in substance or on the fibre by subjecting to treatment with nitrous acid in presence of water mixtures containing aromatic nitrosohydroxylaminates and coupling components, resistant to nitrous acid under the reaction conditions. The nitrosohydroxylaminates are converted into the corresponding diazo compounds. In examples: (1) an alkaline solution of sodium phenyl-, o-tolyl- or a -naphthylnitrosohydroxylaminate, sodium nitrite and sodium 2-naphthol-3-carboxyanilide (which is stable) is acidified to yeild the corresponding azo dye; (2) cotton is impregnated with a solution containing sodium a -naphthylnitrosohydroxylaminate, sodium nitrite and the o-toluidide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid and the colour developed by acidification. The azo dyes are also formed by passing a current of nitrous gases into the solution of the nitrosohydroxylaminate and naphtholate.
