Abstract
Organic sulphur compounds are prepared by treating a salt of a dithio or trithio acid of the formula <FORM:0437653/IV/1> , in which X represents a group R, R2N, RO or RS (R being alkyl or aryl) and M stands for sodium, potassium or ammonium, with a cyanogen halide in an aqueous medium containing an alkali-stable dispersing agent. Suitable dispersing agents are the alkali soaps, such as the sodium, potassium and triethanolamine salts of oleic, stearic and palmitic acids; casein, particularly in the form of sodium caseinate; and wetting agents such as alkylated aromatic sulphonates e.g. sodium isopropylnaphthalene sulphonate. Examples are given of (1) the preparation of tetramethylthiuram monosulphide from sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate and cyanogen chloride in an aqueous solution of triethanolamine oleate; (2) the interaction of potassium ethylxanthate with cyanogen chloride in water containing sodium caseinate; (3) the interaction of sodium ethyltrithiocarbonate and cyanogen bromide in sodium oleate solution; (4) the preparation of diphenyldimethylthiuram monosulphide from sodium phenylmethyldithiocarbamate and cyanogen chloride in an aqueous solution of sodium oleate. U.S.A. Specification 1,788,632 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use of other salts, e.g. those of calcium and zinc, and of salts of thio acids which produce liquid reaction products, such as tetraethylthiuram monosulphide. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
