Abstract

Filaments, yarns, fibres, and like materials, and particularly such materials having a basis of a derivative of cellulose such as cellulose acetate, are conditioned with the aid of tea-seed oil. Materials having a basis of an organic derivative of cellulose may contain pigments or fillers such as powdered metal, metal oxides, or carbonates, lamp black, and opaque organic substances, fire retardants such as b -chlornaphthalene, triphenyl phosphate, and tricresyl phosphate, plasticizers such as diethyl or diamyl phthalate and ethyl toluene sulphonamide, dyes or lakes. The tea-seed oil may be applied alone or as a solution or emulsion or in conjunction with other substances such as sodium and potassium soaps, oleic acid and other oils. The conditioning agent may contain a relatively non-volatile substance having a solvent or latent solvent action on the base of the materials, e.g. when treating cellulose acetate, -ethyl oxy-butyrate, benzyl alcohol, diacetone alcohol, or the formals made by condensing an aldehyde with polyhydric alcohols or partial ethers thereof. The agent may also contain a hygroscopic substance such as a polyhydric alcohol or ethers thereof, and, if desired, a fugitive tint for identification purposes. The agent may be added to a spinning solution; or applied to materials during production or treatment thereof by means of a wick, roller, disc or other device dipping into a reservoir, by passage of the material through a solution or emulsion of the agent, by spraying, by dipping hanks into the agent, or by forcing the agent through packages of yarn. In an example cellulose acetate yarn dry spun from an acetone solution contacts as it leaves the spinning cell with a wick partially immersed in tea-seed oil, to apply 1--2 per cent of oil based on the weight of the yarn. The yarn is twisted and wound on a cap-spinning device. In another example a solution containing 25 parts of cellulose acetate, 75 parts of acetone, and tea-seed oil equal to 4 per cent of the weight of cellulose acetate is dry spun to form yarn. In another example conditioning liquid containing 60--70 parts by weight of the formal of the mono-methyl ether of ethylene, glycol, 30--40 parts of tea-seed oil, and 6--12 parts of a 70 per cent aqueous solution of diethylene glycol is applied to cellulose acetate yarn in amounts equal to 4--6 per cent of the weight of the yarn. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the conditioning of films, foils, and like materials with tea-seed oil. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
