Abstract
Gases and vapours, treating with.-Filaments, yarns, artificial straws or bristles, or other textile materials are subjected in package form to the action of vapours of a conditioning agent generated within the package, which is preferably enclosed in a relatively impervious wrapping of wax paper, parchmentized paper, reconstituted cellulose, or the like, in order to prevent escape of the vapour. The treatment is particularly applicable to materials made from organic derivatives of cellulose, for example, cellulose esters, such as cellulose acetate, formate, propionate, or butyrate, or cellulose ethers such as methyl, ethyl, or benzyl cellulose. Natural materials such as silk, cotton, or wool, reconstituted cellulose such as viscose, nitrocellulose, or cuprammonium artificial silk, or mixed materials such as those containing cellulose acetate may also be treated. The conditioning agent may be water or, for the treatment of materials containing cellulose derivatives, volatile restricted solvents or swelling agents such as, in the case of an acetone-soluble cellulose acetate, ethyl or methyl alcohol or aqueous solutions containing 5-25 per cent of acetone. The yarn is wound on packages such as cones, pirns, or bottle bobbins, which have a hollow core. The conditioning liquid may be absorbed in a suitable material such as a sponge, raw cotton, or infusorial earth, and placed within the package, the core of which consisting of cardboard, metals such as aluminium, plastic materials such as celluloid, or phenolaldehyde condensation products, is perforated to allow access of the vapours to the interior of the yarn package. When the core is of cardboard, it is preferably strengthened by a supporting perforated insert of stronger materials such as those mentioned above. Relatively non-volatile finishing agents or lubricants may be applied to the yarn before or after the humidifying process. Examples of such agents are mineral oils, vegetable oils such as castor oil or olive oil, animal oil such as neatsfoot oil, and softening agents such as p glycol, diethylene glycol, glycerine, or mixtures thereof.
