436,682. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London.-(Assignees of Stevens, R. R. ; Forest Hills, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) July 24, 1934, No. 21694. Convention date, July 26, 1933. [Class 103 (i)] In brake apparatus for vehicles comprising a fluid-pressure brake valve 1 electrically controlled by a pedal 2 also controlling an electric brake whenever the pedal is operated to effect an electric brake application the fluid pressure brake is arranged to be applied after a predetermined time interval. The electric brake is a regenerative or eddy current brake the circuit of which is closed by a contact 37 operated by the brake pedal 2 which by means of a contact finger 42 closes a circuit for an electromagnet valve 48, which admits fluid from main reservoir 3 to a cylinder and piston 58, 59 adapted to operate the brake valve j. A choke 65 delays the operation of the brake valve 1 to allow the electric brake to slow the vehicle until the reduced speed renders the electric brake ineffective. The piston 59 operates the arm 30 of the brake valve by means of a stud 66 which may be adjusted with clearance as shown so that the piston 59 produces only a partial brake application. The brake valve is of the self-lapping type and comprises an inlet valve 13, and an exhaust valve 9 operated by the arm 30 through a spring 25 and a diaphragm 5 on which acts the pressure in the brake cylinder 4. The brake valve may be directly operated by the pedal 2 by means of a slotted link 31.
