Abstract

437,324. Fluid - pressure brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London.-(Assignees of Logan, J. W. ; Cambridge Court Apartments, Edgewood, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Nov. 16, 1934, No. 33062. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1933. [Class 103 (i)] Brake apparatus more particularly for railway vehicles comprises a device for automatically varying the braking effort with the rate of retardation of the vehicle having two co-operating members, one moved by the retardation of the vehicle and the other by a foot-pedal which initiates the braking action, the degree of braking maintained by the device being dependent on the extent of movement of the foot operated member relative to the inertia member. The brake cylinder 14 is controlled by an electrically-operated valve device 10 controlled by a pendulum 66 sensitive to deceleration and acceleration of the vehicle and an arm 76 parallel therewith and adapted to be operated by the pedal 78. The electromagnets 44, 62 are normally energized to close the inlet valve 26 and open the exhaust valve 50 and the arms 66, 76 hang vertically against a stop 94 as shown in the Figure. When the pedal 78 is depressed the arm 76 is moved away from the arm 66 and breaks the circuits of magnets 62, 44 in succession, thus first closing the exhaust valve 50, then opening the inlet valve 26. The application of the brakes and consequent retardation of the vehicle causes the pendulum 66 to swing and if the retardation is sufficient the contacts may engage to energize magnet 44 or both magnets 44, 62, so that the brake cylinder is closed to supply and may also be exhausted until the retardation returns to that adjusted by the pedal and arm 76. An additional valve 36 is provided on the stem of the inlet valve 26 in order to close the exhaust in case the valve 50 is not properly seated. In a modification, the foot-operated arm is U- shaped having light-responsive devices, such as photo-electric cells, on one arm and electric lamps on the other, the pendulum being adapted to swing between the arms and cut off the light from the light-responsive devices which operate relays controlling the brake-cylinder valves.
