Abstract
435,991. Fluid-pressure brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd., and EDGE, S. H., Titanic Works, Lincoln. Jan. 3, 1934, No. 244. Addition to 389,775. [Class 103 (i)] The pneumatic operating device described in the parent Specification is used for the operation of vehicle brakes, a precompressed spring being coupled between the pedal or hand lever and the brakes whereby a valve mechanism is operated to supply power only when the effort applied to the pedal &c. exceeds a predetermined value at least sufficient to overcome the release springs of the brakes, while the power is cut off only when the effort falls below that value. The vacuum device shown comprises a valve casing 10 pivoted to an arm 11 on a rock-shaft 4 to which also are connected the rod 5 leading to the brakes and an arm 3 and link 2 connected to the piston of the cylinder 1. The pedal 8 is connected to a rod 9 slidable in the casing 10 and carrying the atmosphere valve 18 adapted to seat upon the vacuum sleeve valve 14 which under the action of a light spring 14b normally closes the chamber 13 connected by pipe 12 to the vacuum source. The cylinder 1 is connected by pipe 16 to the casing 10 and is normally open to atmosphere by way of the valve 18 and passages 15a. A precompressed spring 19 abuts on the casing and upon a collar on the rod 9, and the end 20 of the rod normally abuts on the casing as shown. When the pedal is operated the rod 9 and casing 10 with the pull-rod 5 at first move together until the effort on the pedal is sufficient to overcome the spring 19 whereupon the valve 18 seats upon the sleeve 14 and the sleeve valve 14 is moved in the casing to connect the cylinder 1 to the vacuum source. Should the power fail the brakes may be applied by manual effort alone. The system may be adapted for compressed air. According to the Provisional Specification the initial compression of the spring may be greater or less than that necessary to overcome the brake releasing springs.
