Abstract
<PICT:0435615/IV/1> Liquid nitric esters, e.g. nitro-glycerine, are separated from acids used in their manufacture or from washing liquids used in their purification by passage through a vessel fitted with a continuous baffle in the form of a strip 2 wound edgewise and with a radial inclination around a vertical axis so that the outer edges of the turns of the strip touch or are close to the wall of the vessel. The mixture is admitted through an inlet 4 and the lighter and heavier are discharged through outlets 6, 5 respectively. The baffle may be inclined radially downwards or upwards. The inner edge of the baffle may not extend to the axis in which case a central axial passage is formed through which the lighter or heavier liquid passes to the upper or lower end of the vessel. The edges of the baffle may be flanged, the flanges in some cases being sufficiently deep to close the space between the turns of the spiral. The vessel may be fitted with internal cooling coils or a cooling jacket.
