Abstract

435,393. Landing aircraft on ships; targets. JOHNS, SIR A. W., McCARTHY, S. A., and BOGIE, F. G., Naval Construction Department, Admiralty, London. March 15, 1934, No. 8161. [Class 115] [See also Group X] Canvases or other flexible supporting surfaces towed from a ship to provide a support or landing means for aircraft are provided with a leading part which forms a hydrodynamic surface this part being movable about a transverse axis lying in the region of its trail ing edge and of the leading edge of the trailed flexible surface As applied for supporting aircraft the canvas is stiffened by battens 2 and at its rear is steadied by sluices 8 stiffened by struts 9. The forward part of the convas is secured to a transverse bracket 13 forward of which is arranged the hydrodynamic surface 16 on the upper surface of which bracket 17 are arranged. The tow wire and the tripping wire are respectively secured to eyes 18, 18<1> and by suitable manipulation of the wires the plane can be towed in a submerged position or brought to the surface. The hydrodynamic surface causes the water impinging on it to be deflected over it thus obviating any disturbance of the underside of the flexible surface. The arrangement may be applied to flexible targets towed from aerial or submarine vessels.
