Abstract
435,213. Hair waving. MAEDER, F., 192, North Terrace, Adelaide, Australia. June 13, 1934, Nos. 17525 and 17526. Convention dates, June 13, 1933 and June 5, 1934. [Class 131] Hair is permanently waved by impregnating with a solution of a sulphide, coiling on a curling rod, and then heating to a relatively low temperature, for example, in the case of normal hair, to a temperature of less than about 100‹ C. An alkali, e.g. ammonia, is preferably added to the sulphide solution. The sulphides of the alkali metals, e.g. sodium sulphide, or ammonium sulphide are preferably employed, e.g. a solution of 2À5 parts by weight of ammonium hydrosulphide in 97À5 parts of water. Organic substances forming colloidal solutions or suspensions, e.g. albuminous substances such as keratin, collagenes or gelatin, agar agar, gum arabic, starch, resins, dextrine, shellac or viscose may be added to the sulphide solution. In an example, 100 gms. of keratin are suspended in 500 c.c. or alcohol and the liquid is slowly poured while stirring into 500 c.c. of concen. trated ammonia. 60 c.c. of this solution are then added to 100 c.c. of a 10 per cent by weight solution of ammonium hydrosulphide in water. Before adding to the sulphide solution, part of the keratin may be precipitated from the keratin solution by the addition of a suitable precipitant, e.g. sodium chloride. The heating may be effected by clips heated internally by electrical resistances or by hot water, or by a clip as described in Specification 415,865 which is heated before application to the tress and is allowed to cool whilst in position on the hair.
