434,884. Antomatic regulation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, DAVIS, G. E., and GIBSON, J. W., c/o General Electric Co., Witton, Birmingham. March 14, 1934, No. 8069. [Class 38 (iv)] A voltage regulator for A.C. current comprises a transformer with a secondary winding 2 in series with the load 1 and a primary winding 3 supplied with current controlled by tap changing means operated by the load current or by a current derived therefrom. The regulating current in the primary 3 depends upon the position of the drum type switch which is rotated by a torque motor 4 having an unsaturated magnetic circuit against weights 20, 21. The pull of the weight 20 is exerted through a cam of varying radius in such a way that the torque decreases as the weight is raised, while the cord through which the weight 21 acts is free in the first running or low voltage position 1 and taut in the second or intermediate voltage running position 5, and also in the third or high voltage running position 8. In the first running position 1, the primary 3 is shortcircuited, in the second running position 5 it is connected across the mains, and in the third running position 8 only the left-hand section is operative. In the first, second and third transitional positions 2, 3, 4, and the fourth and fifth transitional positions 6, 7, the connections, primary 3 and the unsaturated choke 16 are appropriately varied. The transformer tappings may be controlled by contactors operated by solenoids operating at different current values.
