Abstract

469,045. Control systems for welding ; transformers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and LONG, T. A. Feb. 4, 1936, No. 3333. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] The voltage in an A.C. arc welding circuit is controlled by a tapped variable main choke coil 1, Fig. 1, in series with a smaller untapped choke coil 3 adapted to give fine adjustments intermediate the steps of the main coil. The small coil may have a fixed inductance having a value half that between the steps of the main coil, or it may be adjustable by variation of the magnetic circuit as, for example, by a variable air gap in the iron core. A second auxiliary choke coil may be arranged in series with the others. An auxiliary choke may consist of a three-limbed magnetic core with windings 11, Fig. 2, on two of the limbs and an air gap 13 separating these limbs from the third limb 12c. The gap is provided with a magnetic inset 14 movable in guides by screw-and-nut mechanism.
