[Class 46] Brine for regenerating base - exchange material in a main container 10 is formed from salt in an inner container 30 through which water is forced as an upwardly directed rotating stream. The container 30 is mounted on a rubber washer 33 surrounding an upward extension 37 of the pipe 14 which supplies the hard water to the container 10. A tube 34 with slots 36 at the lower end is fixed centrally in the container 30 and surrounds the extension 37. The cover 11 of the container 10 is pivotally attached to a pivoted yoke 17 and has a flange 27 on its lower side which serves to centre the container 30. For regeneration, salt is placed in the container 30 and water passes upwards through the extension 37, downward in the tube 34 and outward through the slots 36, the parts of the tube adjacent the slots being arranged to form passages which direct the water tangentially. The water dissolves the salt and passes outwards through apertures 32 near the top of the container 30, regenerating the zeolite in the container 10 as it passes downward therethrough. A collector fitting 40 for the end'of the outlet pipe 15 comprises an inner tubular member with apertures 46, Fig. 5, and an outer sleeve 41 with apertures 42 and wrapped with monel metal or other gauze, the sleeve being held in position by a cap nut 47. A baffle plate 48 is held between the sleeve and the nut.
