Abstract

Finely divided rubber is suspended in a liquid which does not dissolve or only very slowly dissolves it, but which is completely miscible with bituminous material, and the suspension mixed with molten bituminous material before its character changes from a suspension to a solution. The rubber powder may be obtained by spraying latex or latex concentrates for example as in Specifications 316,006, [Class 70], and 392,592, while the suspending medium may be one of the fluxing oils or agents of the asphalt industry. Suspensions containing for example 20 per cent by weight of rubber can be produced merely by agitation. Powdered vulcanized rubber can be employed or vulcanization effected by adding vulcanizing agents to the suspending liquid and then heating, or the mixture of rubber, bitumen, and vulcanizing agents can be vulcanized. Examples: (1) 11,25 parts by weight of rubber powder are stirred with 50 parts of heavy tar oil and the suspension added to 100 parts molten bitumen; (2) 10 parts of rubber powder suspended in 100 parts of flux oil are stirred into 100 parts molten bitumen.
