Abstract

434,238. Starting, stopping, and reversing. CROSSLEY BROS., Ltd., and CARTER, H. D., Openshaw, Manchester. June 26, 1934, No. 18817. [Class 7 (v)] A master valve j, for the supply of compressed air for starting an engine in both forward and reverse directions, is controlled by an eccentric d within a cam a which it turns by means of a pin-and-slot or lost-motion connection g, h. The cam is provided with noses b, c for " forward " and " reverse " starting respectively, each capable of operating the valve j through a push rod i and a lever k, and the eccentric d is mounted on a hand-controlled shaft e having thereon or in geared relation with means for cutting off the fuel supply to the engine to stop it and means for resetting the fuel and air starter cams for a change in the direction of running of the engine. As shown, a worm m on the shaft e engages a circular rack n on a lever o which through a push rod p adjusts the air starter cams and fuel-pump cams, for instance as described in Specification 399,265. A cam q on the shaft e may control the fuel cut-off by means of a push rod r, and a pointer t on the shaft e moves over an indicator dial s. In the " normal running " position, Fig. 1, the nose c of the cam has just been turned past the push rod i to open the valve j. On turning the shaft e clockwise from this position to the " stop " position, the peg q moves to the lower end of the recess h in the cam, and the eccentric d is turned to bring its small side between the shaft e and the nose c, so that the latter passes over the rod j without depressing it. The worm m may be mounted on a shaft geared to that carrying the cams a, q, or the worm and the cams may be on three intergeared shafts.
