Description

J. F. VAN TUYL. REVERSING GEAR 'FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES. 7
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 13, I920.

UNITED STATES JOHN F. VAN TUYL, 0F MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
REVERSING-GEAR FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 27, 1921.
Application filed August 13, 1920. Serial No. 403,360.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. VAN TUYL, a citizen of the United States, residing at 4236 Queen avenue south, Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Reversing-Gear for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mechanism for guiding and manipulating the push rods of cam and push rod valve gears; and the object of my improvement is to simplify running parts.
I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which 1 is the cam shaft; 2, cams, with lobes severally fitted for forward and back motion; 3, the cam end of push rods; 9, the valve end push rods; 6, a rock lever; 7, guides; 10, valve stems; 4 rotatable guides; 5, a movable harness; 8, a reverse lever.
The valve end of the push rod is connected with the rock lever operating the valve stem by a cup and ball joint or other form of universal joint; or, if the valve stem moves in the same direction with the push rod, is in guides, which may consist of a hollow cylinder containing the end of the valve stem and a ball on the end of the push rod. The cam end of the push rod passes through the rotatable guide carried in the movable harness manipulated with the reverse lever. The connection of the push rod with the harness may be of any kind that will allow the small lateral oscillations of the push rod; the rotatable sphere bearing is chosen as a definite form for illustration.
I claim:
1. In an internal combustion engine, in combination with a cam having lobes severally fitted for forward and back motion, a push rod having a universal joint at the valve end and a rotatable guide carried in a movable harness near the cam end; and means for manipulating the same, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an internal combustion engine, the
combination of a rock lever and a push rod connected by a cup and ball joint, a rotatable 1 guide carried in a movable harness and a lever ,for manipulating the harness, and a cam having lobes severally fitted for forward and back motion, substantially as described and for the purpose Set forth.
JOHN F. VAN TUYL.
