Abstract

Building mortars are prepared by treating an aqueous emulsion p of vulcanized or unvulcanized rubber with an alkali silicate and a powder containing a substance sparingly soluble in water and capable of reacting with alkalies. The basic character of the alkali silicate is thus slowly destroyed and hardening and coagulation takes place. The water of the mortar may be absorbed by the addition of, e.g., calcium sulphate, cement, kieselguhr. Emulsions as of asphalt or benzene may be incorporated. In examples: (1) a mixture of borax, sodium silicofluoride and pulverized quartz or (2) a mixture of borax, para toluene sulphochloride and pulverized quartz is added to a rubber emulsion containing sodium silicate.
