Abstract

In a method for producing road surfaces, wall coverings, shoe soles, rubber matting, moulded blocks and the like from mixtures of aqueous dispersions of rubber, cement, and a hydrophilic colloid, the hydrophilic colloid present is converted by chemical action into an irreversible gel prior to setting of the cement. The aqueous rubber dispersions may consist of or contain guttapercha, balata or similar resins, naturally or artificially obtained, vulcanized or unvulcanized. Cements mentioned are Portland and Ciment Fondu. The term "cements" includes calcium sulphate cements such as plaster of Paris. The colloid may be a soluble alginate, or gelatin or glue. The colloid gels in a few minutes, e.g. 20 minutes, and the mixture sets later, e.g. in 24 hours. When the hydrophilic colloid is a soluble alginate, e.g. sodium or ammonium alginate, it may be gelled by salts of calcium or other metals or by the cement. The gelling of the alginate may be accelerated by adding alkalis or retarded by adding casein, while any tendency of the latex or alginate to premature coagulation or gelling may be suppressed by adding, e.g. sodium silicate. When the colloid is gelatin it may, in the form of a solution slightly peptized by potassium hydroxide, be gelled by adding a form of formaldehyde to the mixture with the cement. When the mixture has been spread it may be coated or dusted with calcium chloride solution or calcium sulphate powder to expedite setting. Eight examples are given, in some of which asbestos fibre or sand are added to the mixture. Specifications 219,635 and 290,313, [both in Class 70], are referred to.
