Abstract
Dentures are made by applying to the denture base a thin layer of material which is solid at the temperature of the mouth but is plastic at temperatures of 45 to 70 DEG C., so that, after heating, the denture may be pressed against the jaw so as to be moulded accurately thereto. Suitable materials are balata or mixtures of balata with small quantities of guttapercha, caoutchouc or both. The denture base may be of vulcanite, a cellulose compound, or metal. The balata layer may be applied as a thin sheet to be cut to shape and pressed into contact with the denture base, or to be secured thereto by means of balata solution, or may be applied in the form of a series of coatings of a thick solution of balata in benzol. In the case of a vulcanite denture the balata layer may be applied before the denture is vulcanized but in this case a thicker layer should be used so that the outer part may not become vulcanized by taking up sulphur from the vulcanite composition. The balata layer may cover the whole, or only part, of the surface of the denture, and if used with a suction denture is formed with apertures to expose the suction discs of the denture.
