Abstract

432,292. Control of D.C. motors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 28, Kingsway, London, and WILSON, J. C., Uplands, Brocton, Stafford. March 9, 1934, No. 7565. [Class 38 (iii)] Varying E.M.F. ; regenerative braking.- In a Ward Leonard or like system the motor is regeneratively braked to rest by connecting the generator field winding in a closed circuit disconnected from the supply, and automatically opening or increasing the resistance of the said circuit when the excitation falls below a predetermined value. To stop the motor a latch lever C is operated mechanically or electromagnetically to release a hook member E and allow a weight G to move a switch arm H into engagement with a contact M and shortcircuit the generator field B through a variable resistance O. When the field current falls below a predetermined value a relay Q opens its contacts R to open or insert resistance in the closed field circuit. Several relays may be provided to insert different values of resistance at different predetermined values of field current. The movement of the switch arm H momentarily inserts a resistance N in the field circuit so that the transition is effected without opening the circuit or short-circuiting the excitation supply. Alternatively the switch may have an auxiliary contact connected to the main contact through a resistance.
