Abstract
431,930. Road - traffic signals on vehicles. JOHNSON, J. B., 17, Selbourne Street, and WOOD, F., The Gables, Feniscliffe, both in Blackburn. April 6, 1935, No. 10666. [Class 118 (ii)] Direction arrows at the front and rear of a vehicle are rotated by means of a handle through mechanical gearing to point to left or right to indicate a proposed turn, are locked in indicating position and are released by movement of the steering mechanism to allow them to be spring-returned to normal. The arrows are illuminated by lamps which are switched on automatically when the arrows are in signalling position and may also be switched on by a hand switch. As shown, when the handle 17 is turned to left or right, the shaft 1 is rotated by gearing 11, 12 to rotate arrows 4, 5 at the front and rear of the vehicles, the shaft being held in indicating position by projection 20 or 21 engaging the recess in arm 22 and the lamps in the arrows being switched on by contact 44 or 45 engaging contact blade 50. When the turn is being made, rod 41 is moved by the steering arm 42 so that arm 34 or 35 clicks past its pawl 28 or 29, but when the steering is straightened the slant surface on arm 34 or 35 engages pawl 28 or 29 and rotates the lever 22 about pivot 23 to release the lock and allow the shaft 1 and the arrows 4, 5 to be restored by spring 18. The lamps in the arrows can be illuminated in the normal position of the shaft 1 to give a " straight ahead " signal by depression of push button switch 47.
