Abstract

430,014. Distant-control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Edwards, M. A. ; 478, Cedar Street, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Dec. 6, 1933, No. 34331. Convention date, Dec. 10, 1932. [Class 40 (i)] In a follow-up system for driving an object, e.g. a gun, into positional agreement with a control member, e.g. a telescope, in which electric valve apparatus controls the supply of current to the driving motor and in which fine and coarse controlling means are employed, the driving motor is controlled by the fine and coarse means according to the extent of disagreement between the controlling and controlled devices. In the arrangement shown, the telescope controls fine and coarse transmitters 28, 36 which are connected to corresponding receivers 30, 37.. The transmitters and receivers are of the resultant field type, the stator of the receiver 37 and the rotor of 36 being geared to the gun 10. The output of the rotor of the receiver 30 is applied to a transformer 24 which effects the biassing of the valve equipment 15, 16. The valves, which may be of the discharge or thermionic type, are supplied through a transformer 18 and normally biassed by a transformer 23. The output of the valves is applied to the driving motor 12 through leads 17. The rotor of the coarse receiver controls a cam 42 which operates a switch 43 controlling relays 47, 48 adapted to disconnect the transformer 24 from the " fine " receiver 30 and connect it to a transformer 50 which is arranged to provide a biassing voltage sufficient to cause amplified output from the valve equipment to run the motor 12 at maximum speed. When disagreement between the telescope and the gun is within predetermined limits, the " fine " control only is effective to bring the gun into correspondence with the telescope. Within these limits the stator of the coarse receiver 37 rotates in opposition to the rotating field produced by movement of the transmitter to maintain the rotor stationary. When, however, disagreement exceeds the predetermined amount, the motor 12 is controlled solely by the coarse control equipment. In modifications, the cam 42 is dispensed with by providing additional valve equipment controlled by the coarse receiver.
