Abstract
429,282. Aircraft &c. windscreens; operating - mechanism. HAWKER AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and CAMM, S., Canbury Park Road, Kingston-on-Thames. Dec. 2, 1933, No. 33919. [Class 103 (ii)] [See also Group X] A front windscreen for aircraft and other high-speed vehicles comprises pivotallymounted panes of glass &c., or series of panes of glass &c., which are interconnected so that when one pane or one series is moved angularly forwardly another pane or series moves rearwardly, and which in the closed position lie in a backwardly inclined plane. As shown the windscreen is in two portions 9, 10 mounted in frames 9A, 10A, pivoted respectively at their upper and lower edges to backwardly inclined pillars 7, the pivots 9B, 10B extending through their supporting bearings 9C, 10C to support rigidly levers 9D, 10D, connected by links 12. The screen-portion 9 is moved angularly by a manually-operable device which has a neck-portion 19 engaging with clearance in an aperture 15 in one of the pillars 7, to enable the device to move with the angular movement of the portion 9, and a screw 14 engaging a trunnion 13 fixed to the frame 9A. Glass &c., side-panels 4 extend rearwardly from the windscreen and their lower edges are held for example in channel-rails 5 secured to the fuselage of an aeroplane, and their vertical edges in channelrails secured to the pillars 7. The opening of the windscreen may be restricted by a stop 20 attached to a pillar 7. A lug 21 carried by each frame 9A, 10A engages the opposite frame when the screen is closed. To prevent flow of moisture backwards and upwards across the screen-portion 10, a channel 22 may be fixed thereto or be formed integral therewith. According to the Provisional Specification the opening or closing of the panes may be spring-aided and the operating linkage may be housed within the fixed frame of the windscreen.
