Abstract

428,882. Bundling. SCARLETT, R. L., Sweethope, Musselburgh, Midlothian. Feb. 16, 1934, No. 5141. [Class 94 (i)] Apparatus for bunching flowers, vegetables, plants, &c. comprises a strap or sling 29 suspended from levers 26 and located in a slot in a trough 9 and a frame 38 adapted to be clamped above the strap, the levers 26 being operated by a treadle 15 to contract the strap about the bunch. The frame 38, which is provided with rubber or other pads 54, is turned down into the clamping position by a handle 41 and is held by engagement of a pawl 42 with a ratchet 43. The levers 26 are adjustably pivoted to blocks 25 carried by vertical rods 18 which slide upwardly in a frame 17 when the handle is depressed, while the lower ends of the levers 26 are adjustably hinged to links 30 pivotally suspended from a cross-bar 17a. Binding material drawn from a container 13 or from a reel is led through a clamping guide 47 over the strap 29 and is temporarily secured to a hook 56 on the lever 26 at the opposite side. As the bunch is compressed, the binding material is drawn taut against a blade 45 carried by the frame 38, so that an appropriate length is severed for tying the bunch. The bunch may be enclosed in a wrapper before being compressed and tied.
