Abstract

428,664. Vehicle spring -suspensions. WESTON, S. B., Summerhouse, Burntwood, near Lichfield, Staffordshire. Sept. 27, 1934, No. 27694. [Class 108 (ii)] In vehicle suspensions pneumatic capsules mounted in relation to each axle are at each side linked together through a reservoir of relatively large capacity so that the capsules at each side form an independent unit and the flexibility of each unit is varied by means of a variation of temperature. Each wheel is suspended by means of levers 5, 5<A>, 5B, 5<C>, from a pneumatic pad or capsule 15 comprising a rubber &c., envelope 14 and a disc abutment 13A 13B carried by the end of the lever. The pneumatic capsules 15 at each side of the vehicle are connected to a reservoir 18 and the two reservoirs are provided with temperature means for varying the flexibility of the pneumatic capsules at either or both sides. As shown coils 19, 19A are interconnected by pipes 20, 20<A> the latter pipe having a valve 27 operated from the driver by means of Bowden cables and arms 31, 32 to admit hot gases to either or both coils by means of the nozzle 22 placed in the silencer and communicating with the pipe 20. A branch 28 is provided from the pipe 20<A> to the exhaust. Admission of hot gases to either or both coils increases the pressure in the respective pneumatic capsules. If desired the reservoirs may be heated by electric resistance coils instead of the coils 19, 19A. Liquid may be placed in the capsules in addition to air for sealing purposes. Auxiliary capsules may be provided.
