Abstract

Fabrics are treated to produce stiffened transparent effects resistant to washing with soap by the application of gelatine or similar albuminous substances, followed by hardening with suitable hardening means, the hardening treatment being followed by treatment with alkali. The dressing treatment may be applied locally, and the fabric may be dyed, prior to or after drying, with direct or acid dyestuffs, the treated fabric showing an increased affinity for the dye and thus producing in the case of locally treated material two shade effects. The treatment and subsequent drying may be effected with the fabric respectively in the tensioned or untensioned condition. When locally treating a suitable fabric in the untensioned condition, cr<\>zepe effects alternating with stiff transparent portions may be obtained.
