Abstract

Carboxylic acids having the formula RXR<1>COOH in which R stands for an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic residue having at least eight carbon atoms, R<1> an aliphatic residue having not more than six carbon atoms and X, oxygen, sulphur or sulphonyl, or their soluble salts are added to aqueous liquids used in the textile, fur and leather industries. The compounds reduce the surface tension of the aqueous liquids and are stated to be frothing, levelling, impregnating, stabilizing and dissolving agents. They may be used in conjunction with alkaline agents and per compounds. In an example, sodium dodecylmercaptoacetate, or the soluble salts of dodecylsulphonylacetic acid or the mixture of ether-acids obtained by etherifying hydroxyacetic acid with coco-nut oil alcohols are used as soap substitutes for washing, prewetting, bucking or dyeing textiles. Compounds in which R is tetradecyl and R<1> is ethane or propane are specified. Specifications 401,118 and 412,305 are referred to. Dodecylsulphonylacetic acid is prepared by oxidizing dodecylmercaptoacetic acid with hydrogen peroxide. Hydroxyacetic acid etherified with a mixture of coco-nut oil alcohols is prepared by condensing formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid with the chlormethyl ethers derived from coco-nut oil alcohols and saponifying the nitrile mixture obtained by treating with potassium cyanide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of the acids or salts thereof, above defined for improving the surface active properties of liquids in general. Reference is made to the emulsifying and dispersing properties of the compounds and in an additional example, a mixture of the sodium salts of octylhydroxyethoxyacetic acid, decylhydroxyethoxyacetic acid and dodecylhydroxyethoxyacetic acid is dissolved in water and perfumed with essence of Portugal to form a hair wash. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the use as emulsifying agents of compounds having the formula RXR<1>COOH in which R stands for an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic residue having at least eight carbon atoms, R<1> an aliphatic residue having not more than six carbon atoms and X, oxygen, sulphur or sulphonyl, or their soluble salts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
