Abstract

427,311. Vehicle brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION, 401, Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, U.S.A. Sept. 12, 1933, No. 25231. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1932. [Class 103 (i)] The brake cross shaft 64 of a motor vehicle is supported on an X-shaped reinforcing member comprising rails 34, 36, 38, 40, joined by a saddle 40. The shaft carries levers connected to a front brake and an opposite side rear brake. If part of braking apparatus fails, two or more brakes will still be available. The members 34, 36 of the X-frame are provided with brackets 44, 46 carrying pins 60, 52 which carry levers 54, 56, 62 carrying the shaft 64. Pin 52 is also supported by a bracket 50 carried by a channel member 45 fixed to the member 36 and the chassis member 12. Lever 54 is connected by an adjustable slotted strut with the brake pedal 72. The upper end of the lever 56 is connected by a cable in a conduit 76 to the hand-lever 78, and also by a cable 79 to the left front brake. The lower end of the lever is connected to the right hand rear brake by a cable 82. The lever 62 is similarly connected to the right front and left rear brakes. The ends of the cable conduits are fixed in brackets 98. In a modification the rails of the X-frame are joined by an upper and a lower plate, the latter having upturned flanges in which are pivoted the levers each of which is connected to brakes on one side. In a further modification a cushioning and return spring is arranged on a pivot of one of the levers and the shaft passes through an arcuate slot in a safety bracket. In a further modification the shaft is mounted on the side rails 34, 36 by a single lever at each end one lever being connected to the pedal and the other to the hand lever and flat cushioning springs are interposed between the levers and the rails. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes an internal expanding band brake having a band 314, Fig. 10 (Cancelled), anchoring on a pin 320 and applied by a servo-shoe 324 operated by a roller 332 on a lever 330. A bracket 98 is also shown in detail. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
